I think the problem is two-fold. First would be the personality of the instructor. Outside of a little instructing in the AF, I never wanted any part of teaching anyone to fly. I simply don't have the skill set to teach. Some folks are like me, but go ahead and get into teaching anyway. Not a great decision, in my opinion. Second, when you've got a lot of hours in your logbooks, it can quickly become tedious explaining minute details to the inexperienced. That's not fair, but is often the feeling I have. Perhaps your dad is a little like me. The man is probably a tremendous pilot, he just has difficulty getting explaining things down at levels we passed years and years ago. There are lots of extremely good AF pilots who DO have the ability to teach, however, and those are the ones I was referring to in my previous note. Their experience in truly invaluable.
